The state of NSW can be divided into 4 sections - thin coastal strip, mountains, agricultural plains and western plains.
Running through NSW from Vic to Qld is The Great Dividing Range. The Great Dividing Range includes the Northern, Southern and Central Tablelands and the Southwest Slope as well as the Snowy Mountains. Most of these mountains rise above 1000m although they aren’t very steep. the highest point in Australia is Mt Kosciuszko, which is 2282 m high. The lowest point is the Pacific Ocean at 0m.
The western plains cover almost 2/3 of the state and include arid and semi-arid plains. These plains have a very sparse population compared to the cost. Central to the economy are the agricultural plain just to the east of the western plains.
Major rivers in NSW include the Darling, Namoi, Lachlan, and Murrumbidgee rivers. The Willandra Lakes are found in the Murray-Darling Basin and cover an area of 240 square kilometres.
The Darling River flows southwest from the edges of the Great Dividing Range and is 1879 km in length. The Murray starts at the end of the Darling and is the main source of irrigation for the country’s agricultural system. It is 1930m long.
