In NSW, the most common and destructive hazard is bushfires. Bushfires generally pose quite a threat to NSW followed by storms and then floods. According to the 2013-2014 government statistics, bushfires have had the most occurrence during september to january, storms recorded happening during the months march and november and floods having the rarest occurrence despite our proximity to the coast. The natural disasters are damaging not only physically, but socially and economically. An example of a major bushfire that has greatly impacted NSW is the Blue Mountain bushfires where the residents of Warrimoo and Blaxland were evacuated and 250 firefighters were sent to the area to help control the fire. The fire ended up burning about 90 hectares of bushland but no properties were damaged.
